KINITSUKYU® Safety Guide

Please read this page before purchasing or using KINITSUKYU® products.

KINITSUKYU® products are designed for self-care, wellness, education and professional practice.

Moxa involves heat and combustion. When used incorrectly, it can cause burns, fire, smoke exposure, damage to surfaces or other injury.

Please read the information below carefully before using any KINITSUKYU® product.

Important Safety Warning

KINITSUKYU® moxa products are not toys.

Moxa incense is intentionally burned during use and produces heat, smoke and ash.

The KINITSU holder also becomes hot during use.

Always use KINITSUKYU® products carefully and responsibly.

Never leave burning moxa unattended.

Never use burning moxa near anything that can catch fire.

Always keep burning moxa, hot KINITSU devices and moxa ash away from children, animals and anyone who cannot safely control or monitor the treatment.

Before You Use KINITSUKYU®

Please make sure that:

  • You are 18 years or older.

  • You have read the product information and safety instructions.

  • You understand how to safely light, handle and extinguish moxa.

  • You have a suitable, stable and heat-resistant working area.

  • There are no flammable materials nearby.

  • The room has appropriate ventilation.

  • You have enough time to monitor the moxa continuously.

  • You know how and where you will safely extinguish the moxa before you begin.

Never begin a moxa session if you are unable to remain attentive to the burning moxa.

Fire Safety

Because moxa is burned during use, fire safety is essential.

Always:

  • Keep burning moxa away from curtains, paper, clothing, bedding, furniture and other combustible materials.

  • Use the KINITSU holder only as intended.

  • Place the holder on or over an appropriate stable, heat-resistant area when required.

  • Keep the surrounding area clear.

  • Monitor the burning moxa continuously.

  • Completely extinguish the moxa after use.

  • Make sure the moxa is fully extinguished before leaving the area or disposing of it.

Never:

  • Leave burning moxa unattended.

  • Place burning moxa directly on a flammable surface.

  • Use moxa near flammable liquids, gases or vapours.

  • Use moxa while sleeping or when you may become drowsy.

  • Allow children to handle or light moxa.

  • Assume that moxa is safe simply because the flame is small or not visible.

Burn Prevention

The moxa incense, KINITSU holder and surrounding components can become hot during use.

Do not touch heated parts of the moxa incense with bare fingers.

When using KINITSU on or near the body:

  • Always monitor the temperature carefully.

  • Never assume that a particular technique or distance is safe for every person.

  • Take individual sensitivity into account.

  • Stop immediately if the heat becomes excessive or uncomfortable.

  • Do not intentionally create a burn.

  • Do not continue applying heat to skin that is already excessively hot, irritated or damaged.

A person's perception of heat can vary considerably.

Children, older people and people with reduced sensation may be particularly vulnerable to burns.

Do Not Use on Damaged Skin

Do not apply moxa directly to:

  • open wounds;

  • broken skin;

  • actively bleeding areas;

  • severely irritated skin;

  • areas of infection; or

  • areas where normal sensation is significantly reduced,

unless this is specifically appropriate under the direction of an appropriately qualified professional.

Do not use moxa over an area when you cannot reliably monitor the person's response to heat.

Smoke & Ventilation

Burning moxa produces smoke and airborne combustion products.

Use moxa in a well-ventilated environment.

Avoid exposing yourself or others unnecessarily to concentrated smoke.

If you or another person experiences coughing, breathing difficulty, dizziness, headache, nausea or other unexpected symptoms, stop the session and move to fresh air. Seek appropriate medical attention if symptoms are serious or do not resolve.

People with respiratory sensitivities or conditions should take particular care and seek appropriate professional advice before using moxa.

Medical & Individual Considerations

Moxibustion may not be appropriate for everyone.

If you are unsure whether moxibustion is appropriate for you or another person, seek advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional before use.

Take particular care where a person has:

  • reduced sensation;

  • impaired circulation;

  • difficulty communicating discomfort;

  • a condition affecting their ability to respond to heat;

  • significant skin problems;

  • respiratory sensitivity;

  • a condition that may be affected by heat; or

  • any other circumstance where heat or smoke may present an increased risk.

Pregnant people should seek appropriate professional advice before using moxibustion.

This safety guide does not provide individual medical advice.
